Blue Streak Invitational Basketball Tournament

The Blue Streak Invitational Tournament runs December 26-30, 2011. It is the largest single fundraising event we are involved in and dramatically reduces the cost of our annual Catholic Heart Work Camp Mission Trip! This tournament would not work without our volunteers, so thank you for your willingness to help.

Last year we had over 1100 players in 5th – 8th grade, playing in five gyms over four and a half days in a total of 171 games.

The tournament benefits the Blue Streak Scholarship Fund and St. Louis Youth Group Mission Trips. We would like to thank all who have participated in previous years either as sponsors, participants or fans. Our tournament finals are played before a standing room only crowd. It is something to experience. The atmosphere is electric, the fans are pumped up and the kids think they are playing in an NBA final, not to mention you will see some pretty good basketball. Because our tournament is such a huge success, we were able to make substantial contributions to both of our organizations.

Here is some information about the programs that will once again benefit from the tournament:

  • Blue Streak Scholarship Fund, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization devoted to giving inner-city Memphis children the benefit of a Catholic school education. Students receiving Blue Streak scholarships attend Diocese of Memphis Jubilee Schools — schools located in our city’s poorest zip codes. Over 80% of Jubilee School students come from families living at or below the poverty level. Created by area Catholic school alums as a grassroots project in 2003, Blue Streak has, in less than eight years, raised and distributed approximately $600,000 in scholarships to Jubilee School students. Our volunteers are Catholic and non-Catholic, and come from all over the Memphis metropolitan area. We are excited about the impact that our efforts will make on the lives of the students of the Jubilee Schools, their families, and the Memphis community. Visit their website at BSSF.net for more information.
  • Catholic HEART Workcamp (CHWC) was started in 1993 by founders Steve and Lisa Walker in Orlando, Fla. CHWC was born out of their desire to foster the spiritual growth of each participant through the sacraments, Catholic faith sharing and prayer as they live as Disciples of Christ through serving others. That first year only a few camps were held with 100 volunteers. Last year 32 camps were held with over 11,000 participants.St. Louis Youth Group has participated now for six years. In our first year there were 39 St. Louis Church youth who traveled to Mobile, Alabama. While there, they painted houses, cleaned yards, picked up trash from Hurricane Katrina, and stocked food pantries. The trip was such a success that the next summer 75 St. Louis youth attended the Workcamp in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Once again, they worked extremely hard in the community painting, building fences, performing general clean up and cutting trees. The group size grew again the following summer and was split into two separate trips visiting Lexington, KY and Tampa, FL. Since that summer, St. Louis youth have attended CHWC in Omaha, NE, Bluffton, SC, Twin Cities, MN and Davison, MI.

In the summer of 2011, more than 160 St. Louis youth served the poor and underprivileged in Oklahoma City, OK and Philadelphia, PA. This number speaks volumes about our youth and their commitment to be the hands and feet of Christ to the world.   This summer, the St. Louis youth will travel to Chicago to serve once again!
